Relationship Education Services
You are embarking on a long and exciting journey together. Relationship education services such as relationship counseling, couples workshops, mediation and pre-marriage education can be invaluable as you navigate this new chapter of your lives. Below are a selection of resources that may be helpful.
Relationships Australia Victoria (RAV) is a leading provider of relationship support services. Their aim is to help Victorians achieve positive and respectful relationships. A community-based not-for-profit organisation, they have no religious affiliations, and aim to help all members of the community, regardless of their religion, age, gender, sexual orientation, lifestyle choice, cultural background or economic circumstances.
Relationship and Marriage Preparation
Doing a Pre-Marriage course such as 'Prepare' can assist you in the development of the skills necessary as you enter into a long term commitment. The course comprises three sessions with a counsellor, and is designed to draw out shared values, ideals, expectations and any issues that may need attention or be kept in mind. Couples are asked to fill out a questionnaire to help them think about all aspects of their relationship. A counsellor facilitates a review of the results and a discussion of what emerges for each person in relation to the other. It is important to prepare for the challenges that inevitably arise when people live together and share their lives.
This may cover:
- personality differences
- lifestyle expectations
- communication styles
- friends and interests
- family backgrounds
- beliefs about parenting, money etc.

IMAGO Relationship Therapy. Relationship Rescue Institute
What is Imago?
Imago Relationship Therapy (IRT) was created by Dr. Harville Hendrix, author of the best-selling “Getting the Love You Want: A Guide For Couples (1988).”
The term Imago is Latin for “image,”and refers to the “unconscious image of familiar love.” Simply put, there is often a connection between the frustrations experienced in adult relationships and early childhood experiences. For example: If you frequently felt criticized as a child, you will likely be sensitive to any criticism from, and feel criticized often by your partner. Likewise, if you felt abandoned, smothered, neglected, etc., these feelings will come up in your marriage/committed relationships.
Most people face only a few of these “core issues,” but they typically arise again and again within partnerships. This can overshadow all that is good in the relationship, leaving people to wonder if they have chosen the right mate. So here is the good news: When you can understand each other’s feelings and “childhood wounds” more empathically, you can begin to heal yourself and your relationship, and move toward a more conscious relationship.
Imago Relationships International can help you do this by teaching the “Imago Dialogue” process, and helping you move from blame and reactivity to understanding and empathy. With this process, you can transform conflicts into opportunities for healing and growth, and connect more deeply and lovingly with your intimate partner.
Start Right, Stay Connected- Pre-Marital Counseling
Whether you are preparing to be married, newly married or committing to a long-term relationship, you'll want to Start Right and Stay Connected. Here is an opportunity for you to get the knowledge and tools needed to navigate the challenges of marriage. This is a one-day seminar intended to help your committed relationship last. We believe the smarter you start your partnership, the stronger your connection will be. You will learn:
- to communicate effectively with your partner through a important relationship skill -the Imago Dialogue
- why you pick the partners you do
- practical tools for dealing with your relationship hot buttons
- ways to continue to nurture and grow your relationship and learn the five "Languages of Love"
- the stages of relationships – from romantic love to the power struggle and beyond
- questions to ask before saying “I do”
- how to create a relationship vision
Start Right, Stay Connected is relationship education, not therapy, and includes lectures, demonstrations, couple's dialogues and written exercises. There are many opportunities for group sharing, but the seminar emphasizes partners' sharing privately with one another. You are not required to share anything with the group except for a brief introduction and closing.
Imago couples therapy is different because...?
Imago couples therapy takes a radically different approach. We don't work to "fix" you, we invite you to join with us in working on the relationship as a whole. In Imago, nobody is right or wrong. The challenge is to learn how to talk together about things which really matter, in a way that feels safe, supportive, and positive.
That puts you in the driving seat! You and your partner learn to work on the relationship yourselves, and you become the experts on your own relationship by learning to find out what is really going on for your partner, and understanding how things in the present have a deep emotional connection to their past.
